ALBANY, N.Y., Jan. 25, 2007 - Albany Medical Center has the best (lowest) mortality rate in the state for surgery performed on infants and children with congenital heart defects, according to a report issued this week by the state Department of Health.
The Albany Medical Center Hospital's risk-adjusted mortality rate was 1.96 compared to the next-best rate in the state of 3.18 at Columbia Presbyterian-NYP for the four-year period 2002-2005 monitored by the state. The average mortality rate for the 15 centers which offer this specialized surgery was 4.08. During the four-year period, 315 surgeries were performed at the Medical Center with 6 deaths.
The Medical Center’s pediatric cardiac team is headed by pediatric heart surgeon Neil Devejian, M.D., assistant professor of surgery and director of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Albany Med. Dr. Devejian also serves as the David S. Sheridan Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
“Dr. Devejian and his team are to be commended for having the most successful outcomes in the state,” said David Clark, M.D., director of the Children’s Hospital at Albany Med. “It is reflective of the fact that our patients get excellent individualized care before, during and after this specialized operation which requires a strong, highly talented and dedicated interdisciplinary team of experts. We are very proud of this program and its outstanding results.”
Dr. Devejian credited his team for helping him to achieve these successful outcomes. “What I’ve tried to do since coming here seven years ago is develop a team with expertise in every area — pediatric cardiology, pediatric intensive care, anesthesia, nursing, perfusion — all of the ingredients which give us a well-rounded, comprehensive approach in caring for these challenging patients. I am pleased that this report validates that we have been very successful in our approach.”
