Albany, N.Y., December 7, 2005— Steven Stain, M.D., has joined the staff of Albany Medical Center as chair of the department of surgery. Dr. Stain, who is trained in general surgery, has a special clinical and research interest in liver and pancreatic surgery as well as public health. In his new position, he oversees the clinical, educational and research missions of the department of surgery.
Dr. Stain, a highly published physician and clinical researcher, had been professor and chair of surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, with a secondary appointment as professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University. Prior to joining Meharry, Dr. Stain was an associate professor at the University of Southern California Medical Center, where he also served his internship and residency and performed a fellowship in surgical critical care. He received his medical degree from the University of California Irvine.
Dr. Stain has been published in over 70 peer-reviewed publications, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals. He is a director of the American Board of Surgery. He also is an active member of several surgical societies, including the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, Society of University Surgeons, Western Surgical Association, Pacific Coast Surgical Association, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Stain is married to Dr. Hyacinth Mason, an epidemiologist, and has three children.
