ALBANY, N.Y., September 8, 2005 - Plans to build a 126-room hotel that will cater to Albany Medical Center patients and their families as well as accommodate visiting professors and prospective students were announced today by officials from Albany Medical Center, BBL Development Group and Albany Mayor Gerald Jennings.
The new facility, to be known as the Hilton Garden Inn at Albany Medical Center, will be built on a parking lot owned by the Medical Center, situated at the corner of New Scotland and Holland Avenues, adjacent to the institution’s parking garage. It is expected to cost $14 million to construct, a cost that will be borne by BBL. It is hoped that construction can begin by the end of the year and be completed within a year.
“This project is a direct result of the sustained growth of the Medical Center’s programs and services in recent years,” said James J. Barba, the Medical Center’s chairman of the Board of Directors and president and chief executive officer. “As the only academic medical center serving a 24-county region in northeastern New York and western New England, many of our patients travel from outside the Capital Region to seek care. Now, these patients, their families and friends will have the option to stay in a comfortable hotel right on the grounds of the Medical Center, as will visiting professors, physicians, and prospective students to not just Albany Med, but to our partner institutions in the University Heights area.” The University Heights Association includes the Albany Medical College, the Albany College of Pharmacy, the Albany Law School and the Sage Colleges.
The facility will include several retail shops on the ground floor, as well as a business center, conference facilities, a restaurant, indoor pool and spa and a number of other amenities including wireless high speed Internet access in all rooms.
The hotel, which will displace 90 parking spaces that may be restored by building an addition to the parking garage, will be priced in a rate ranging from $99 to $199 per night. Access to the hospital will be possible via connecting the hotel lobby to the Medical Center’s pedestrian bridge over New Scotland Avenue.
"This is an exciting day in the City of Albany. This new state of art hotel will further strengthen the world-class location that has been created by Albany Medical Center and the other University Heights area institutions. In addition, this project will leverage the redevelopment of Park South to the benefit of existing residents, businesses as well as the institutions of UHA," said Albany Mayor Gerald Jennings.
The general contractor for the project will be BBL Construction Services and the architect is HCP Architects. The hotel will be managed by Ocean Hospitalities Inc. of Portsmouth, N.H., the third largest hotel management company in the nation.
The Albany Medical Center consists of one of the state's largest teaching hospitals, the Albany Medical Center Hospital, and one of the nation's oldest medical schools, the Albany Medical College.
