ALBANY, N.Y., February 17, 2004 – Angela Sheehan, R.N., clinical nurse research coordinator, has been named the Albany Medical Center’s Employee of the Year for 2003.
In making the announcement, James J. Barba, chairman of the Medical Center’s Board of Directors and president and chief executive officer, noted that the award is special because it recognizes an individual who encompasses all the best qualities and traits an employee can have. “Because of this, the Employee of the Year really serves as a mentor to all of us--someone whose excellence stands not just throughout the year in which the award is given, but throughout their career.”
Albany Med, the region’s largest private employer, employs more than 6,000 people.
Angela holds a unique role as a clinical nurse research coordinator. Based in the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine, she coordinates drug and other therapy research trials for several divisions including gastroenterology, allergy, asthma and immunology, nephrology, and more. She has a staff of eight.
According to a co-worker, “Angela has independently developed that role into a faculty practice resource. She conducts regular meetings to share her knowledge and to assist all those involved in clinical research studies to understand and achieve regulatory compliance. Angela’s motivation for all that she does stems from her pride in the institution and her desire to always ‘do the right thing.’”
Another colleague praised her compassion for patients with these words: “Just listening to the tone of her voice when she is on the phone with patients you can tell she is genuine and really cares about them.”
An Albany native, Angela lives in Delmar with her husband, Franklin Laufer, who works for the Department of Health, and their two daughters.
Angela attended the Marylrose Academy (now the Academy of Holy Names) in Albany and received a B.S. in biology from the University at Albany and a Master’s in nursing from Pace University in New York City. She began working as an oncology nurse at Albany Med in 1976, a job she held for many years.
