ALBANY, N.Y., February 10, 2004 – Denise Martin Sheridan, C.R.N.A., Ph.D., associate graduate director and professor in the Center for Nurse Anesthesiology at Albany Medical College, was recently awarded the Helen Lamb Outstanding Educator Award by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
Martin-Sheridan is credited for advancing nurse anesthesia programs and the profession for more than 20 years. Her many contributions include a study titled “The Perceived Influence of Financial Risk Factors on the Viability of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs,” published in the AANA Journal in October, 2002.
“Helen Lamb was a visionary who recognized the need to establish practice and education standards for nurse anesthetists and to advance high-quality patient care,” said Martin-Sheridan. “I am proud and humble to be recognized among the recipients of this prestigious award.”
The Helen Lamb Award was established in 1980 in memory of Helen Lamb Frost, an AANA founding member, past president and nurse anesthesia educator. The award recognizes the commitment of an individual to the educational standards of nurse anesthesia.
Educating nurse anesthetists since 1951, the Center for Nurse Anesthesiology at Albany Med prepares skilled nurse anesthesia practitioners in a modern, completely equipped operating suite consisting of 23 operating rooms and three delivery rooms that serve more than 18,000 patients annually. The program is currently ranked fifth in U.S. News & World Report’s 2004 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” in the category of nurse anesthesiology.
Albany Medical Center is northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center. It consists of one of the nation’s oldest medical schools, Albany Medical College; one of New York’s largest teaching hospitals, Albany Medical Center Hospital; and one of the Capital Region’s most active fundraising organizations, the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Inc.
