ALBANY, N.Y., February 4, 2004 – Albany Medical College is ranked fifth in U.S. News & World Report magazine’s current 2004 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” in the category of nurse anesthesiology.
The “America’s Best Graduate Schools” publication is an exclusive ranking of more than 1,000 graduate school programs. Rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline.
Albany Med placed fifth on the list of the top 17 nurse anesthesiology programs, ranking higher than such notable programs as Duke University and Baylor College of Medicine.
“We’re very excited about this award, which recognizes the outstanding work of our nurse anesthesiology program and of each member of its faculty and staff,” said Vince Verdile, M.D., dean of the Medical College and executive vice president for health affairs. “We are proud of the quality education we continue to provide to nurse anesthetists.”
Educating nurse anesthetists since 1951, the Center for Nurse Anesthesiology at Albany Med prepares skilled nurse anesthesia practitioners in a modern, completely equipped operating suite consisting of 23 operating rooms and three delivery rooms that serve more than 18,000 patients annually. The 26-month program offers a master’s of science degree.
The Center for Nurse Anesthesiology at Albany Medical College is staffed by Kathleen M. O’Donnell, C.R.N.A, Ph.D., associate professor and graduate director; Denise Martin-Sheridan, C.R.N.A, Ph.D., professor and associate graduate director; Carolyn Austin Gries, C.R.N.A, M.S.N, instructor and graduate clinical director; and Helene M. Gregory, academic program coordinator.
Albany Medical College is part of the Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York's only academic health sciences center. The Medical Center also includes one of New York's largest teaching hospitals, Albany Medical Center Hospital, and one of the Capital Region's most active fundraising organizations, the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Inc.
