ALBANY, N.Y., Dec. 15, 2003 – A book for clinicians on childhood cancer edited by the director of Albany Medical Center’s Child Cancer program has been recognized by the British Medical Association in its listing of 2003 book competition winners. “Practical Algorithms in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology” by Richard Sills, M.D., professor of pediatrics and director of pediatric hematology and oncology at the Children’s Hospital at Albany Med, was given a “highly commended” designation in the “medicine” category.
The book is the first to utilize a practical diagrammatic approach to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of blood disorders and cancers occurring in children. Dr. Sills edited as well as authored several segments of the book. Three other Children’s Hospital physicians, Dr. Jennifer Pearce, Dr. Margaret Leary and Dr. Joanne Porter, also contributed to the publication. Additional contributors were from throughout the United States as well as Europe and Asia.
“We were very pleased to learn that the British Medical Association chose our book for this special recognition,” Dr. Sills said. “The people associated with the writing of this book have long recognized the need to put together a resource that would enable physicians who may not see children with cancer and blood disorders on a day-to-day basis with a logical, step-by-step approach that would assist them in the diagnosis and treatment of those diseases. This book accomplished that goal.”
The book was published on Feb. 4 by S. Karger Publishers, Inc.
