ALBANY, N.Y., November 11, 2003 - George T. Hickman, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, a nationally known expert in healthcare information systems, has been appointed senior vice president and chief information officer of the Albany Medical Center.
Hickman, who previously served as vice president and chief information officer at the West Virginia United Health System in Fairmont, W. Va., assumed his new responsibilities Nov. 1. He reports to James J. Barba, president, CEO, and chairman of the Board of Directors, and serves on the institutions Presidents Council.
Mr. Hickman brings a wealth of expertise and experience garnered from nearly two decades of leadership positions in the healthcare arena, Barba stated. Were thrilled that he has accepted the challenge of leading our effort to modernize and transform our information systems to further enhance patient care, medical education and biomedical research.
As senior VP and CIO at the Medical Center, Hickman is responsible for overseeing all information technology activities throughout the institution, which includes the Albany Medical Center Hospital and its South Clinical Campus and the Albany Medical College and its Physician Group Practice. In Fairmont, Hickman was responsible for all information technology activities for the university-based health system that included 650 acute beds across two hospital campuses, a physician faculty practice, various sub- and post-acute care facilities in the community, and clinic sites throughout the state, as well as a managed care contracting entity.
Hickman also served as vice president of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and as a partner of Ernst & Young LLP. From 1995-1996, he served as Mr. Barbas interim chief administrative officer at Albany Medical Center. Earlier appointments included CIO for Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, senior manager for Price Waterhouse, and associate director of IT and Management Services for St. Marys Medical Center in Knoxville.
Hickman holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Tennessee. He is a fellow of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and a charter member of the College of Health Information Management Executives. In addition to a number of other professional appointments, he serves as a senior member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
